Passmore Edwards

Extra care flats in Liskeard on the site of former hospital.

Formerly the Passmore Edwards Cottage Hospital, this scheme of 55 extra care flats features state of the art facilities providing a safe, accessible home for the residents. The design utilises local materials complimenting the existing building and surrounding area. The scheme has U-values down to 0.14w/m2k with a target airtightness of 1. The existing building was extensively renovated to accommodate communal facilities, with a large extension designed for the 55 flats.

The palette of materials is simple; render, brick, stone, timber, cladding panels and aluminium. These materials have been detailed to provide a clean contemporary design to the elevations and provide visual contrast to the existing building. The design concept was strongly routed in providing a safe, easily accessible, level access home for the users. Internally the design concentrates on the wellbeing and ease of use for the residents while providing a non institutional feel to the scheme.
We have worked closely with a range of partners and stakeholders to consider every element to create a building and environment with the end user at the centre of all our design thoughts. A thorough consultation exercise with local residents was undertaken to help influence the design. We also worked closely with the local architectural liaison officer in order to ensure the building will be Secured by Design compliant
