Sail Loft
This late 17th Century listed building was originally on the Dartmouth quayside servicing the ships (The harbour has since been filled in for a car park).
This challenging project was to bring a disused, dilapidated historic building to be usable and still meet with modern expectations on comfort and energy use. This had to be achieved without compromising the historic envelope of the original Sail Loft. The resultant design is for four two storey, two bedroom, maisonettes. The ground floor needed to remain as a commercial space due to planning requirements.
The building was divided up in a manner to strengthen the original building fabric but not to damage the original building form. The re-fenestrations and wall cladding replicate in essence the nature of the original and ensure that the character is still there with the perpendicular external fabric retained –but still both strong and weatherproof.
